Lake Erie datalogging/control operations went digital in 2011 after the introduction of the prototype P7MAIN board and associated charger and memory boards. Five systems were built and delivered by June 2011, some firmware bugs were subsequently discovered and corrected, all are alive and well today. The design is actually a set of three boards, a main board plus a charger and memory boards. P7MAIN original combined layers design and individual layers design, charger combined layers design and individual layers design, memory board combined layers and individual layers. Some shortcomings in the original have been addressed in the new CDi3.P7 and CDi3.LE boards. These two additional boards are meant to take care of lake erie operation needs as they manifest now, in the near future, or even later. The CDi3.P7 takes care of things now, the CDi3.LE board takes care of things later, and as a result P7MAIN has been deprecated and will never be built again. The two new boards are much the same as the original but have several enhancements as explained below:

  1. Clock increase from 6.144MHz to 7.373MHz resulting in a maximum baud rate of 115.2K for both communication channels.
  2. Ability to use the newer DS1553 RTC, since the DS1386 is now obsolete but still available in the aftermarket.
  3. Design preserves the original 8-channel analog circuitry, multiplexer is not used in digital modes, ADC only there to read the battery voltage.
  4. Added a Bluetooth wireless interface to the main communications channel.

CDi3.RMe Submersible, Universal, Gas Field Controller
  • All Keller-digital pressure measurement, universal gas field controller, 11"x11"x11" cube, implements Keller comms protocol.
  • Designed to be perfectly comfortable at the bottom of Lake Erie, can be used as a line controller, plunger lift, intermitter, etc.
  • Fully-on, fully-off type of controller. Wakes up, reads everything, stores everything, operates the switch if it has to, and goes back to sleep 2.1 seconds later.
  • Programmable interval from 1 minute to 24 hours, with one minute resolution. Due to this operating mode, it can run without recharge for years.
  • Supports RS485, master-slave, wired or wireless networks at up to 115.2Kbits/sec.
  • Local RS485 network to "talk" to its Keller pressure transmitters at up to 115.2Kbits/sec.
  • State-of-the-art PA10LHX singles and PD10LHX differential Kellers, all Hastelloy C276 construction, sourced from Keller in Switzerland.
  • Field-replaceable differential and switching cylinders, pressure transmitters.

  • 316L cylinder contains a latching type of solenoid, sourced from Burkert in Germany and a 10,000psi penetrator originally sourced from Impulse in California (now a Teledyne Company).
  • The solenoid can switch at pressures of up to 140psi, so it is meant to be supplied through a pressure regulator. The lake operation has had a 20-year period of successfully using these 6V, low-power, media-isolated, latching type of valves.
  • Waterproof, quick connectors allow very fast change-out of the entire cylinder in the field.
  • The solenoid is used as a pilot valve to operate a pneumatic actuator which in turn does the actual well switching.
